The Long Drive Home

I usually visit my family just once per year both because the trip is expensive and because it’s long. We left Boston on a 9:30 flight, landing in Charlotte a bit before noon.

Unfortunately Charlotte isn’t our destination. From the airport it is another three and a half hours, give or take, to the house I grew up in. That is, three and a half hours if you don’t stop for lunch or gas, both of which we always do.

Our flight was fairly uneventful, but I did manage to make a lot of progress in my current read. It’s so nice to read for pleasure and not class! We didn’t get any snacks on the plane though (and I didn’t want to dig out my almonds) so I was starving by the time we landed.

My father, who is generally opposed to eating out because of the cost, could only be convinced to stop for fast food. I did a quick Google search for the best vegetarian option (can you tell I don’t really do fast food?) and we settled on Burger King.

A veggie burger with no mayo and a side of sweet potato curly fries later, I was no longer starving. Unfortunately the fries weren’t really what I was expecting (they were covered in cinnamon-sugar), but the burger was surprisingly good.

Sure, not the healthiest option possible, but not bad when you aren’t the one driving or paying. Had I realized about the fries I would have asked for a side salad, but I still made out pretty well.

Now we are back on the road (after a second stop for gas) and still have two hours to go. The car we’re in was mine in high school and was already 10 years old when I got it. Luckily it’s a good little car and rides well, but unfortunately both the radio and CD player no longer work.

This may be a long drive folks.

What are you up to today?
