While looking for ideas for my first ever Foodie Penpals package this week, I came across Raw Rev 100 bars online. Being on a bit of a nutrition bar kick, but unwilling to subject my penpal to anything I hadn’t already tried myself, I got them for myself. I ended up choosing a variety pack of 100-calorie snack size bars so I could try more than one flavor with minimal caloric impact.
Today I brought three of the flavors to work to try out as the day went on: Chocolate Coconut Bliss, Chocolate Crave, and Spirulina Dream. The only flavor I left at home was Golden Cashew (which I did by mistake seeing only the three flavors I brought when I first looked into the bag).
These little guys are certified organic, vegan, kosher, gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy free as well as high in protein and iron. The texture is reminiscent of Larabar, which is unsurprising given that the ingredients are somewhat similar. What I especially loved about these bars is that they are the perfect size for a small snack that will keep me going, but won’t make me miss my next meal. They also kept me very energized at work, usually the job of several cups of coffee. I imagine that they would be great as pre- or post-workout snacks.
A bit about each flavor:
Chocolate Coconut Bliss (Organic Cashews, Organic Sunflower Seed Kernels, Organic Agave Nectar, Organic Dates, Organic Coconut, Organic Cocoa processed with Alkali, Organic Almonds, Organic Sprouted Flax Seed). This bar = Almond Joy, no joke. It was the first one that I tried and it couldn’t have made me happier. I used to be an Almond Joy and Mounds addict, but rarely have them now.
Spirulina Dream (Organic Cashews, Organic Dates, Organic Sunflower Seed Kernels, Organic Agave Nectar, Organic Almonds, Organic Spirulina Powder, Organic Sprouted Flax Seed). This bar both looks green and tastes green. If you’ve ever had a green smoothie, then you’ll know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, suffice it to say that you can taste the spirulina as you might taste the spinach or kale in a green smoothie. Lucky for me, I love that “green” flavor. This bar is very earthy and still sweet enough to satisfy a sugar craving.
Chocolate Crave (Organic Cashews, Organic Sunflower Seed Kernels, Organic Agave Nectar, Organic Dates, Organic Cocoa processed with Alkali, Organic Almonds, Organic Sprouted Flax Seed). Holy chocolate! This bar is amazing. I often find myself craving chocolate and this tastes like a brownie with nuts (chewy and moist with tons of chocolate flavor). I can imagine myself throwing a couple of these in my school bag to eat during class when I need a chocolate pick-me-up but want to keep it healthy.
Golden Cashew (Organic Dates, Organic Cashews, Organic Sunflower Seed Kernels, Organic Agave Nectar, Organic Almonds, Organic Sprouted Flax Seed). I tried this bar a day later than the others and really enjoyed it. I wasn’t quite sure after the first bite (which was oddly tangy), but from the second bite on it was like eating a handful of cashews. Not my favorite of the bars, but still very delicious and a great snack.
Overall I give these bars top scores (maybe I really should come up with a standardized scoring system). The Chocolate Crave and Chocolate Coconut Bliss are likely to be loved by all while the Golden Cashew and Spirulina Dream may be an acquired taste. Regardless, I anticipate keeping these stocked at work and at my apartment for snacking emergencies.
