When I was a kid we didn’t have cereal very often. I came from a Southern home where breakfast food included eggs, bacon, grits, biscuits, gravy, pancakes, sausage, etc. Cereal was a special treat that we basically begged for, but which usually went stale in the cabinet because what’s better than grits? Sorry, mom.
As I got older I realized that most of the cereal out there was really just junk. Full of sugar and not much else. Occasionally I can find a nutritious cereal or granola, but for the most part I still shy away from it in favor of a smoothie. The exception is when I want something to top my Chobani or those rare occasions when I want a bowl of cereal with almond milk before bed. What, you don’t eat cereal at night?
My most recent barrier for finding a nutritious and delicious cereal is gluten. Since I’ve been avoiding it, I have to analyze labels on anything processed. Knowing the sneaky ways gluten sometimes makes it into things makes it difficult to always know whether I’m setting my body up for rebellion.
When I saw people posting about a company called MixMyOwn for creating personalized cereals I was intrigued, but skeptical. When I realized they offer gluten-free options for the cereal base, I was excited to try it!
I checked out the pre-mixed versions and while the gluten-free option sounded good, I wanted to try my hand at mixing my own because that’s what the company is called after all!
I started with the gluten-free premium multigrain base then added fuji apple chips, figs, banana chips, almonds, chia seeds, cinnamon, and guarana. I also had the option to name my mix, which was great. While I’ve noticed some other people chose names reflective of them personally (e.g., Becki’s Mix), I chose to go a more descriptive route. After all, I want to know what’s in there! Meet my mix: GF Fruit & Seed Mix
My order arrived SO quickly, super important for something perishable. I love that the name of my mix is on the back along with the unique nutrition facts.
It’s also awesome that I can reorder the same mix by scanning the QR code. I also love the zip top seal so I can reclose the bag and keep my mix fresh. Of course I dove right in to my mix when it arrived.
The verdict? Delicious! Definitely not as sweet as most cereals out there, but that’s what I wanted. There was just enough sweetness from all the fruit, but also a ton of crunchy goodness from all the seeds, nuts, and the base itself. Also, check that nutrition label again, look at all that iron! I have a hard time getting enough iron in my diet so this is perfect.
I’ve since had my mix on top of Chobani, a handful as a snack, and more with almond milk as “traditional” cereal. I love the way it turned out, but I also can’t wait to make another mix and play around with all the add-ins. There are so many options including tons more fruit (berries galore!), just about any kind of nut or seed you can imagine, and “extras” that include (but are not limited to) bee pollen powder, acai powder, cacao nibs, hemp protein powder, matcha powder, spirulina, and if you’re feeling like you need a bit more sweet, marshmallow bits!
If you are a fan of ANY of those ingredients or just a fan of cereal in general, you have to check out this company. There’s nothing like having so much control over what goes into your food so if you don’t have access to a bulk food section at your local grocery store or if you just want someone else to do the mixing for you, check out MixMyOwn and create your mix!
I received my mix from MixMyOwn free of charge to sample and share if I chose. I was not compensated otherwise and was under no obligation to review the company. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
